What type of settlement to expect from a dog bite to the hand?

I was bitten by a doberman while entering a place of business. As i was opening the door the dog grabbed a hold of my hand, and chomped down(right hand). Turns out it was the guard dog and he was suppose to be in the back, but wasn't. I had three puncture wounds, and a hand that swelled up like a balloon. I'm a bank teller, and missed a week of work. I was referred to a PT for 8 weeks, 3 different Dr.s and finally i'm at a neurologist. He said that there is nothing to do surgically, but will have to treat the ongoing pain for the rest of my life. We hired a lawyer because of the medical bills, which the guy's insurance company has paid up to this point(they had a cap of 5,000.00--and that has been used) It's been a year, and we are now going to try and settle the claim. We never discussed what type of settlement the lawyer will ask for. I'm just curious, how do you place a dollar amount on pain and suffering? What should i expect for a dollar amount. I will have pain the rest of my life, taking pain pills on a daily bases, i'm a bank teller as well as a craft er. Every day i'm reminded of this guy's negligence.
